On May 9, 2022, young people, provoked by the government's repression launched against the protest, stopped the vehicle in which Amarakirthi Athukorala and his bodyguard were traveling. As they surrounded it and protested, the security officer inside the vehicle fired shots at the youths to scare the crowd. At that moment, one youth died, and later another youth died in the hospital.
The minister's security officer was responsible for those deaths. After this attack, as the youths chased them, the two who got out of the vehicle entered a nearby ready-made garment factory building. The youths who pursued them killed them with their own firearms. However, the youths initially testified that they had committed suicide.
After destroying the stages at the unarmed protest site and dispersing the crowd, on that day, when the whole country had become a chaotic mess, the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa, who served as Prime Minister, and the burning down of ministers' houses also made it a day full of unfortunate events.
