The Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force has succeeded in raiding an illegal abortion center operating under the guise of a private medical center located very close to the Beruwala Police Station and arresting the doctor who carried out its activities.
Police state that the arrested suspect had previously served as a medical officer in the Beruwala area, and this operation was launched based on information received by Kalutara Division Senior Superintendent of Police K.A. Udaya Kumara that this racket was being carried out behind the Beruwala Police Station.
After the relevant information was forwarded to the OIC of the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit, police intelligence officers arranged to contact the doctor through a decoy and book an appointment for an abortion.
Accordingly, the police team, acting on the 8th of last month with a search warrant obtained from the Kalutara Magistrate's Court, went to a place called 'Beruwala Nursing Home' located on Perera Mawatha behind the Beruwala Police Station, and at that moment, a female police constable deployed as a decoy was about to undergo an abortion, and the suspect was apprehended by the law.
A stock of drugs used for abortions was taken into police custody from this location, and investigations have revealed that he had charged forty-five thousand rupees or more for a single abortion.
At the time of the raid, as the suspect doctor was arrested, the woman who worked as his assistant collapsed unconscious at the scene, and although the doctor offered any amount of money to the officers not to arrest him, the officers rejected the bribe and arrested him.
Furthermore, further investigations revealed that this doctor had also been involved in a drug pill trafficking operation for a long time.
This raid was carried out by a team of officers, including OIC Chief Police Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police and on the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa, Director of the Walana Anti-Corruption Strike Force.
