Prison authorities state that the unrest that occurred yesterday at Boossa High-Security Prison has now been brought under control.

This conflict situation began yesterday afternoon when a group of high-security inmates detained in 'D' ward were brought out for physical exercise and were being prepared to be re-admitted to the ward.

Internal prison sources report that several inmates who protested re-entering their wards climbed onto the prison roof, shouted, behaved riotously, and also damaged prison property.

To control this situation, a joint operation was launched by a team of about fifty prison officers and Special Task Force (STF) officers. During this, there was a heated exchange of words and some scuffling between the two parties.

Although unofficial reports indicate that several inmates were injured due to assaults by security forces, prison officials have not yet officially confirmed this.

Information has been revealed that Samindu Dilshan, a key suspect in the Ganemulla Sanjeewa murder case, is among the inmates involved in this incident. Additionally, individuals such as Batumeeya, Haawa, Kanatte Sudu, and Bilal, who are accused of drug trafficking and organized crime, are also reported to have been involved in this clash.

It is stated that the immediate cause of this conflict situation is the new rules imposed by the newly appointed Superintendent for Boossa Prison. Specifically, due to the observation that there is a racket of bringing drugs and prohibited substances into the prison through the exchange of food parcels brought from outside, the new Superintendent has taken steps to control inmates sharing food in groups.

However, the Department of Prisons states that by last night, with the intervention of security forces, the situation was completely brought under control, and all inmates were directed back to their wards.

It has been decided to appoint a special investigation committee to conduct an inquiry into the incident, and the Department of Prisons is also focusing on identifying the inmates who behaved riotously and transferring them to other prisons.
