The boyfriend's testimony about his girlfriend Umayangana, who jumped from the bridge and died in front of him

A deeply tragic incident that shook the entire Nainamadama area of Wennappuwa was the suicide of a seventeen-year-old girl who jumped into the Gin Oya. This was not merely the unfortunate death of one young woman, but an event that marked the tragic end of a youthful love affair, becoming a major topic of discussion among local residents.

A long-standing love affair escalated into an argument, resulting in one life being tragically lost prematurely and another life falling into the hands of the law. The unfortunate young woman who lost her life was Mohana Kumar Umayangana Sathsarani, who had resided in the Wennappuwa Nainamadama area for some time and was temporarily living in Kochchikade Poruthota at the time of the incident.

Information reports indicate that there was a long-standing love affair between the deceased Umayangana and an eighteen-year-old young man named Meringnage Ramesh Lakshan, residing on Gin Oya Mawatha, Wennappuwa Nainamadama, who is said to be connected to this incident. Their relationship was not a secret, and initial police investigations have revealed that even the elders from both sides were aware of it. This relationship, maintained with the blessing or understanding of their parents, suddenly broke down or became conflict-ridden due to a suspicious incident.

On the evening of the 28th, the day of the incident, the young woman came to her boyfriend Ramesh Lakshan's house in Wennappuwa Nainamadama. She stayed there for about twenty minutes, during which an argument erupted between the two. The primary reason for this argument was the boyfriend's suspicion that the young woman was seeing someone else. Statements given to the police indicate that an exchange of words occurred between them based on this suspicion. However, at that time, the boyfriend gave the young woman 2,000 rupees, which she took before leaving the house.

The critical moment of this tragedy occurred after she left her boyfriend's house. A short while after leaving the house, the young woman called her boyfriend again. She tearfully explained that her mother was scolding her and that she was afraid to go home. However, the boyfriend, still angry from the earlier argument, also scolded her over the phone. But Ramesh Lakshan, thinking that she was under severe mental distress due to both her mother's and his own scolding, immediately decided to go look for her with a friend.

The young man and his friend traveled by motorcycle to the Gin Oya bridge in Nainamadama, where she was said to be. As soon as they reached the location, they were greatly startled by what they saw. Umayangana, who was already on the bridge, immediately jumped into the Gin Oya upon seeing the young man approaching her. Ramesh Lakshan, seeing her drowning, immediately jumped into the Gin Oya with the intention of saving her, but fate intervened. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to pull her out of the water and had to return to shore empty-handed.

Following this unfortunate incident, a massive search operation was launched by local residents and the police to find the body of the young woman who had gone missing in the Gin Oya. Accordingly, the next morning, on the 29th, local residents were able to find her lifeless body in the Gin Oya. Further investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the boyfriend is reportedly currently in police custody.
