A tragic incident has been reported from Kalugala, Baduraliya, where a young student with a bright future lost his life due to his intense passion and hobby for motorcycles. The unfortunate individual who passed away was an 18-year-old named Hasindu Themiya Wijetunga, residing at Horahahena Road, Kamburawala, Baduraliya.
The accident occurred on the night of the 23rd, on the Baduraliya - Kalugala road. While traveling on a motorcycle with a friend, the motorcycle lost control, skidded, and collided with an electricity pole by the roadside. Hasindu, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died after being admitted to the hospital, and the friend who was riding on the back of the motorcycle also sustained injuries.
Hasindu, who studied in the technology stream for his Advanced Level at Matugama C.W.W. Kannangara Maha Vidyalaya, was a talented and brilliant student. He passed the Ordinary Level examination with seven distinctions for all nine subjects and excelled equally in academics and extracurricular activities. He contributed to his school winning the Herman Loos Trophy by representing the school cadet corps and was also a talented athlete who achieved All-Island victories in karate and swimming.
Ms. Ruwani Abeynayake, Hasindu's mother and the eldest child in a business family, is in deep sorrow, unable to bear the loss of her son. According to her, Hasindu had an incredible passion for motorcycles. He used to buy motorcycles as a hobby, decorate them, and then resell them. His mother tearfully recalled that the motorcycle involved in the accident had been purchased by him only about two weeks prior, and he had a dream of starting a motorcycle-related business in the future.
As if by a cruel twist of fate, Hasindu's 18th birthday fell on January 22nd, the day before the accident. On the night following his birthday, he was on his way to attend a wedding in the area when he met this unfortunate fate. Hasindu, who was very friendly with his friends and always willing to help others, has left his school friends and the entire community deeply shocked by his demise.
Further investigations into this fatal accident are being carried out by a team of officers, including the OIC of the Traffic Division, under the instructions and guidance of Chief Police Inspector Prasanna Wedisinghe, the OIC of the Baduraliya Police Station.
