Cabinet Media Spokesperson and Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, emphasized that legal action should be taken against a tuition teacher who allegedly made defamatory statements against the great Sinhala author, Martin Wickramasinghe.

The Minister also stated that with the widespread proliferation of the internet and social media, there is a need for some regulation to protect the dignity of respected individuals representing a country.

These remarks were made at a Cabinet media briefing, in response to a question raised by journalists regarding a tuition teacher accused of making defamatory statements against Martin Wickramasinghe.

The Minister further stated that a legal framework is essential to control such incidents, and that such laws are important not only for living individuals but also to protect the dignity of respected individuals representing a country. He emphasized that with the spread of the internet and social media, there should be some control over such actions occurring within them. The Minister pointed out that this should not be interpreted as suppression of media or social media, or a deprivation of freedom of speech, and emphasized that a certain legal system is essential for the safe existence of society.

The Minister explained that it would be more appropriate if such matters could be managed through regulatory systems, but laws are essential for the few individuals who act disregarding rules, traditions, and the existence of society. He also stated that public consultations are already underway for the Online Security Bill, and public feedback is important for it.
