Four prison guards, accused of aiding and abetting inmates in assaulting an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons at Boossa High-Security Prison, have been arrested by Rathgama Police. As confirmed by the Galle District Deputy Inspector General of Police's office, this arrest took place yesterday (08) evening.
The incident was reported on December 07 last year. Police state that the assault occurred due to a conflict between two suspects detained in the special section of Boossa Prison and prison officials. It was revealed that the two inmates had assaulted the Assistant Superintendent of Prisons. Subsequent investigations revealed that the assault was carried out with the assistance and abetment of the four prison guards who are currently under arrest.
It is also reported that another prison guard involved in this incident was previously arrested, produced in court, and subsequently released on bail. The four newly arrested suspect guards are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate's Court.
Under the instructions of Galle District Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr. Jagath Seram and Galle Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Amal Edirimanna, a team of officers including Rathgama Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Mr. Sumith Priyantha is conducting further investigations into this incident.
