Three suspects, for whom INTERPOL Red Notices had been issued in connection with organized crime, murder, and financial fraud, were arrested in Dubai and brought to the island yesterday (16) morning. A team of officers from the Sri Lanka Criminal Investigation Department brought them from Dubai on a SriLankan Airlines UL.

226 flight to Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, arriving around 5:20 AM.

The extradition of these suspects to Sri Lanka was carried out based on diplomatic relations established between the Sri Lanka Police and the security forces of Dubai and Abu Dhabi under extradition law. Among those arrested in those countries over the past few days are a prominent figure linked to underworld activities in the south and a suspect in the shooting incident involving the secretary of former Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

Raveen Chaminda Weerasinghe, alias 'Puncha,' among those brought to the island, is a 52-year-old resident of the Kandana area. He was accused of the shooting incident targeting the personal secretary of former Minister Mangala Samaraweera in the Kandana area in July 2025 and a murder. He is scheduled to be handed over to the Western North Crimes Division.

The other organized criminal is Kirielladeniya Don Rasika Sanjeewa Kumara, alias 'Uragaha Chooti Malli,' who is said to have orchestrated numerous crimes centered in the Elpitiya and Urasmanhandiya areas. This 30-year-old individual was a wanted suspect in connection with extortion and drug trafficking and is scheduled to be handed over to the Elpitiya Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit for further investigations.

Among the arrivals is a woman who was accused of misusing government funds while working at a foreign embassy. This 56-year-old woman, Nishamani de Silva, is a resident of Ratmalana, and the Colombo High Court had sentenced her to imprisonment and a fine. She has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.

The Sri Lanka Police has so far obtained 95 Red Notices to apprehend such criminals hiding in foreign countries, and the police have succeeded in extraditing 21 suspects to the country in 2024 and 2025 alone.
