Horana Chief Magistrate Chandana Kalansooriya ordered three individuals, including a person who had disrobed and fled after stealing a luxury motor car worth approximately 12.5 million rupees belonging to a temple in Horana, Bellanthudawa area, and 3.7 million rupees collected from devotees for the creation of a Buddha statue, to be remanded until the 13th. Those remanded were the disrobed individual known as Berelapanathara Samitha Himi alias Vitharanage Samantha, Nadakandage Ishara Sampath, a resident of Rotumba area who aided and abetted him, and another monk.
These suspects were arrested based on a complaint made by a monk residing at the said temple. After the demise of the chief monk of the temple, the responsibility of looking after the temple's property and the motor car was entrusted to this suspect monk. However, preliminary investigations revealed that he betrayed that trust, took the temple's deeds, property, and money, disrobed, and fled.
At the time of arrest, the main suspect was staying in a room with a woman. During the inspection of that location, the police found a sword, women's underwear, condoms, sexual stimulant drugs, and empty liquor bottles. It was also revealed during the trial that the suspect had previously been arrested by Matugama Police for driving under the influence and without a driver's license while fleeing after robbing the temple's property, and was released on a fine of 60,000 rupees after being produced in court.
The fleeing suspect had also stolen the deeds for a six-bushel paddy land and a one-and-a-half-acre high land belonging to the temple, as well as another deed owned by the temple. Furthermore, information has been received that he also stole the security camera system installed at the temple, a projector, and a bunch of keys. The local dayaka sabha (devotee council) has expressed strong protest and displeasure regarding these actions.
It was reported to the court that the stolen motor car has already been sold to another person, and the Horana Special Criminal Investigation Unit has launched a comprehensive investigation to recover it. Furthermore, the police are also investigating whether the suspects have committed other crimes using this motor car. Attorney Hemantha Wickramarathchi presented facts to the court on behalf of the suspects regarding the incident.
