Dr. Indrani Ranwala, wife of former Speaker and Member of Parliament Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala, was injured and hospitalized after the car she was driving met with an accident early this morning (17). The Biyagama Police confirm that the accident occurred directly in front of the MP's house located on the Kelaniya - Biyagama road.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the accident occurred when the MP's wife, who was coming from the Bandaramulla direction, stopped her car on the right side of the road and was turning it to enter the house, and a Proton type car traveling from Kelaniya towards Bandaramulla collided with it. Based on information provided by a police constable who was on night security duty at the MP's house at the time of the accident, the police immediately launched investigations.
The driver of the car that caused the accident is a lead guitarist of a music band, and he has been arrested by the Biyagama Police. A senior police officer stated that the arrested suspect is a 30-year-old resident of Jawatta, Kalutara North, and investigations confirmed that he had consumed alcohol at the time of the accident.
The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Mahara Magistrate's Court, and further investigations into the incident are underway. A police team, including Acting OIC of the Traffic Division Police Sergeant Upali (34895), is conducting these investigations under the instructions of Biyagama Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector A.A.K.M. Wijesinghe.
