Today (26), three Sri Lankan air passengers were arrested by customs at Katunayake International Airport. A stock of goods worth eighty-six lakhs (8.6 million) rupees, which they attempted to illegally bring into the country, was found here.
This arrest is the result of a special operation conducted around the arrival terminal, targeting the festive season.
Among the arrested suspects, one is a 58-year-old businessman residing in the Negombo area. The other two are 38-year-old businesswomen residing in the Bandarawela area, according to customs.
During the inspection of the suspects' luggage by customs officials, a large stock of goods was discovered. Among them were 220 cartons of foreign-manufactured cigarettes (44,000 cigarettes), 19 bottles of foreign liquor, 430 packets of collagen used for cosmetic purposes imported without the permission of the Ministry of Health and the National Medicines Regulatory Authority, and many other footwear and various merchandise. All these goods have been taken into custody by customs officials, and further investigations have been initiated.
