Recently, a special program to provide relief to people affected by climatic disasters was implemented, centered around the Kandy Municipal Council premises. A volunteer group led by social media activist 'Soome' spearheaded this commendable effort, with its primary objective being the provision of essential items, including dry rations, for those affected.
The Municipal Commissioner had granted permission to use the area near the Opposition Councillor's office at the Municipal Council for this humanitarian operation, and
this group was engaged in distributing all donated items transparently based on need.
However, angered by their inability to obtain the relief supplies as they wished, the Opposition Councillor group of the Municipal Council arrived at the location and strongly protested. It is reported that they threatened the volunteer group, demanding that they immediately vacate the area near the Opposition Councillor's office and move to another location.
This disgraceful incident quickly spread across social media networks, drawing strong public condemnation against the obstruction caused by a group of public representatives to volunteers who had stepped forward during a disaster.
Upon learning of the incident, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa immediately issued a message via his official Facebook account, apologizing to all parties whose feelings were hurt by this incident.
The Opposition Leader emphasized that strict disciplinary action would be taken against the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) councillors of the Kandy Municipal Council who obstructed the relief efforts carried out by Soome and his team. He further stated that he sincerely regrets, on behalf of the party, the misconduct and unnecessary interference of the councillors involved.
