Yesterday (26), office activities were completely halted and a highly tense atmosphere was created due to a threatening message received by the official email address of the Kandy District Secretariat, stating that a vehicle containing explosives was parked on the premises. However, police investigations later revealed that this information was false.
It has also been revealed that this message was prepared by distorting a report issued by Indian intelligence agencies in 2021.Following a complaint by District Secretary Mr. Indika Udawatta, the police, Special Task Force (STF), Bomb Disposal Unit, and Police Canine Unit immediately responded and were called to the scene, launching a comprehensive security operation. During these searches, which began yesterday around 9:30 AM, the main entrance gates of the office were closed, causing numerous severe difficulties for the public who had come seeking various services.
Meanwhile, the police instructed all officers working at the office to immediately proceed to their personal and official vehicles. As a result, they had to stop their official duties and assist in the vehicle inspection process. Less than an hour after the police confirmed the first threatening email was false, another similar message was received by the District Secretariat, further escalating the fear within the office. Due to this, it is reported that some employees took leave and went home.
Especially, a suspicious situation has arisen regarding how this second email message was circulated among employees, and a separate investigation has also been launched into it. A suspicion has arisen as to whether this was a fake email created in a situation where most employees prefer to take leave on the 26th, which falls between the Christmas holiday on the 25th and Saturday the 27th, to get a long weekend.
Further investigations into this entire incident are currently being conducted under the direct supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Central Province, Mr. Sudath Masinghe.
