The official signing to re-enact the bilateral agreement for the mutual recognition of driving licenses between Sri Lanka and Italy took place yesterday (12) in Rome, Italy.

Representing the Government of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Italy, Mr. Satya Rodrigo, and representing the Italian Government, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ms. Maria Tripodi, signed this agreement.

This agreement was first signed in 2011 and renewed in 2016, with its validity expiring in 2021. Following extensive discussions between the transport authorities of both countries, the agreement has now been successfully re-established.

According to the new agreement, citizens residing in the respective country for less than six years will have the unique opportunity to convert their national driving license into the license of their country of residence without facing additional theoretical or practical tests.

This facility will be of immense support to the large Sri Lankan community living and working in Italy, enabling them to expand their employment opportunities and serve more effectively in that country.

The agreement is expected to come into force within 60 days after its ratification by the governments of both countries, and an official announcement will be issued once it is effective.
