A news story about a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) councillor, representing a municipal council in the Gampaha District, distributing rice packets to disaster victims with her name and phone number written on them, has become a hot topic on social media. It is reported that her name, her position as a councillor, and her mobile phone number were clearly marked on these lunch parcels, which were provided with the aim of providing relief to displaced people.
Photos of the rice packets bearing the councillor's details, as well as a series of video clips containing related phone conversations, are currently circulating rapidly online. The audio recordings include a person who called the councillor using the provided phone number, stating that the rice was very tasty and that they called to express their gratitude.
Another person called her and stated that the rice packet they received contained only rice, with no curries, and asked if they should come to collect the curries.
According to the audio clips circulating on social media, the councillor responded by saying that since she distributed these rice packets, one of her supporters must have written her name, position, and phone number on them. Furthermore, the conversations also record her questioning the callers if they were trying to make fun of her (to 'byte' her).
When inquired about this incident, several local police officers also confirmed that a municipal councillor in the Gampaha District had distributed rice packets as disaster relief, with her name and phone number mentioned on them.
