The budget of the Colombo Municipal Council for the year 2026 was passed by a majority vote today (December 31) during its second reading. The budget of this council, which is controlled by the National People's Power, was approved by a majority of two votes, with 58 votes in favor and 56 votes against.
Previously, the first reading of the 2026 budget presented to the Colombo Municipal Council on December 22 was defeated. At that time, 60 votes were cast against the budget, while only 57 votes were cast in favor.
Following that defeat, Colombo Mayor Ms. Vraie Cally Balthazaar presented the budget to the council once again today. After the second vote, the budget was successfully passed.
