A 54-year-old Belarusian national, who was bathing in the sea off Wewala beach in Hikkaduwa, has died after being caught in a rip current.
According to the police, the foreign national, who was swept out to sea by a rip current, was later washed ashore. He was then admitted to Balapitiya Hospital by the 1990 ambulance service, where he reportedly died while receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, yesterday (19) afternoon, a 44-year-old Russian national woman, who was bathing in the sea off Hikkaduwa beach, was also caught in a rip current and was in danger. However, she was successfully rescued due to the swift action of police lifeguards.
