Yesterday, December 30, several fatal road accidents were reported from various parts of the island, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of six individuals. These accidents were reported from the police divisions of Mulleriyawa, Welipenna, Kandy, Wennappuwa, Bandaragama, and Dompe, with driver negligence and traffic law violations appearing to be the primary causes.
On the morning of the 30th, an elderly person died in an accident that occurred in the Walpola area within the Mulleriyawa police division. The accident happened when a three-wheeler traveling from Aggona towards Angoda Junction collided with a pedestrian who was walking on the road. The pedestrian, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died after being admitted to the East Colombo Base Hospital for treatment. The deceased has been identified as a 75-year-old resident of Walpola, Angoda. The driver of the three-wheeler has been arrested in connection with the incident, and Mulleriyawa Police are conducting further investigations.
Meanwhile, another tragic accident occurred on the same morning near Galmatta Junction on the Mathugama - Aluthgama road in the Welipenna police division. Police stated that the accident happened when a van traveling from Mathugama towards Aluthgama collided with a woman who was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing. The woman, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died after being admitted to the Dharga Town Hospital. The deceased was a 76-year-old resident of Dhelkada, Galmatta. The van driver has been arrested, and Welipenna Police are investigating the incident.
The accident reported from the Kandy area occurred on the night of the 30th. In the Kandy police division, on Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, a motorcycle traveling from Peradeniya towards Kandy collided with a pedestrian crossing the road, causing the motorcycle to overturn. Both the pedestrian and the motorcyclist were injured in this accident and admitted to Kandy Hospital, where the pedestrian died while receiving treatment. The deceased was a 71-year-old resident of Yatippiyangala, Gampola. His body has been placed in the Kandy Hospital mortuary, and Kandy Police are conducting further investigations.
Another accident occurred during the daytime in the Dummala Deniya area on the Colombo - Puttalam main road within the Wennappuwa police division. This accident happened when a prime mover, a heavy vehicle traveling from Colombo towards Puttalam, collided with a cyclist who was traveling in the same direction. The cyclist, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died upon admission to Marawila Hospital. Police have confirmed that the deceased was a 49-year-old resident of Wanaathawilluwa. The driver of the prime mover has been arrested by Wennappuwa Police.
A fatal accident also occurred in the Bandaragama area on the evening of the same day. In the Bandaragama police division, near Galkade Junction on the Bandaragama - Kesbewa road, a motorcycle traveling from Bandaragama towards Kesbewa collided head-on with a bus coming from the opposite direction. The motorcyclist died at the scene of the collision, while the person riding pillion on the motorcycle was injured and admitted to Panadura Hospital. The deceased motorcyclist was a 53-year-old resident of Willawitiya, Kuruwita. The bus driver has been arrested in connection with the accident, and Bandaragama Police are conducting investigations.
In the Dompe police division, a somewhat different type of accident occurred in the morning in the Kodikara Mawatha area on the Pugoda - Hanwella road. An inoperative three-wheeler was being towed by another three-wheeler from Pugoda towards Hanwella with the aid of a rope. The towed three-wheeler, unable to be controlled, swerved and collided with a person who was walking and pushing a motorcycle from the opposite direction. The person, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died after being initially admitted to Dompe Hospital and later to the National Hospital Colombo for further treatment. The deceased was a 60-year-old resident of Gampalagedara, Pugoda. The driver of the towing three-wheeler has been arrested, and Dompe Police are conducting further investigations.
