A 20-year-old youth residing in the Matugama area has allegedly stabbed to death a 49-year-old father of two in a car on Nawala Old Road. The victim was reportedly having an illicit affair with the youth's 23-year-old beautiful girlfriend. The illicit relationship that developed between the young woman named Kaveesha, who worked at a private institution in the Koswatta area, and Manoj Kumara, who served as a marketing manager at the same institution, has been identified as the immediate cause of this crime. The suspect youth had been in a romantic relationship with the young woman for about four years, and he stated during police interrogations that he committed the murder because his repeated requests to end this new relationship, which began after she started working, were not fulfilled.
On the evening of the 18th, when the incident occurred, heavy rains were lashing the Colombo area. Kaveesha, who was at a bus stop in Nawala Koswatta, was unable to go home due to the rain. At that moment, she called Manoj, her company's manager, and asked him to come to her location. As Manoj arrived in his car, picked her up, and was driving towards Nawala, Kaveesha's former boyfriend pursued them on a motorcycle. On Nawala Old Road, the young man blocked the car, forced it to stop, then entered through the rear door and severely reprimanded Manoj, who was in the driver's seat, and his girlfriend.
A heated argument ensued among the three inside the car, and the young man demanded to be dropped back at the location where his motorcycle was parked.
During that journey, the young woman openly declared that she had a relationship with Manoj and no longer wanted a relationship with her old boyfriend. Following her statement, Manoj also affirmed the relationship. Enraged by this, the suspect youth pulled out a hidden knife and immediately attacked Manoj, who was in the driver's seat. When the young woman tried to intervene, she also sustained cut injuries to her hand.
While Manoj lay seriously wounded from the knife attack, the suspect attempted to get out of the car and flee. However, with the young woman's screams, a Welikada Police officer, who was traveling on that road in civilian clothes for official duty at the time, immediately intervened and apprehended the suspect. With the help of bystanders, the injured man was taken to a private hospital in Nawala, but he had already passed away. The arrested suspect was produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court and remanded until the 4th of next month. Further investigations are being conducted by a team including Welikada Police Station OIC Chief Inspector Saman Jayasinghe, under the instructions of Nugegoda Division Senior Superintendent of Police Mangala Dehideniya.
