As the water level of the Kelani River is currently rising rapidly, Mr. Prasanna Ginige, the District Secretary of Colombo, has issued a special announcement advising residents in low-lying areas along both sides of the river and its tributaries to evacuate immediately.
Specifically, with the rising water levels, the Ambatale flood control embankment has begun to overflow, creating a severe flood risk for areas around the dam as well as downstream regions.
Considering this emergency disaster situation, the District Secretary emphasizes that residents in low-lying areas along the main roads extending from Kaduwela to Malabe, Athurugiriya to Malabe, and Malabe to Battaramulla must immediately move to safe locations.
Furthermore, due to the overflowing of the Ambatale embankment, the section between the Malabe and Kaduwela main road and the low-lying areas above it are already being inundated, so residents in these zones should be extra vigilant.
Authorities announce that Malabe Model Boys' College and Pittugala Yashodhara Maha Vidyalaya have been prepared to provide temporary shelter for displaced residents evacuating their homes due to the flood risk.
The Colombo District Secretary further urges the public to take precautionary measures, considering the prevailing adverse weather conditions and the rapid rise in water levels, and to adhere to the instructions from disaster management units.
