Following an analysis of the heavy rainfall currently occurring in the Kalu Ganga basin and water gauge data, the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Department of Irrigation has issued a red flood warning.
According to this warning, issued at 7:30 AM today (28) under number 02, there is a severe risk of a major flood situation developing in the low-lying areas around the Kalu Ganga within the next few hours. This warning will be effective until 7:30 AM on November 30, 2025.This major flood risk will directly impact several Divisional Secretariat Divisions in both Ratnapura and Kalutara districts. According to Department of Irrigation data, residents in the low-lying areas of Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, and Elapatha in the Ratnapura District should remain highly vigilant. Furthermore, Director of Irrigation, Mr. L. S. Sooriyabandara, points out that this flood situation could also develop in the low-lying areas belonging to the Kalu Ganga flood plain within the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kalutara, Ingiriya, Horana, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, Madurawala, and Agalawatta in the Kalutara District.
Considering this emergency disaster situation, the Department of Irrigation urges the public residing in the affected areas to act with extreme caution, and also requests drivers and passengers traveling through these flood-prone areas to pay close attention. Furthermore, instructions have already been given to disaster management units to take immediate action and necessary steps regarding this situation.
