Due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions across the island, flight operations at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake have been severely disrupted, leading to the diversion of six scheduled incoming flights to other airports.

The Airport Duty Manager confirmed that this step was taken considering the risk involved in safely landing aircraft due to heavy rainfall and dark weather conditions. Accordingly, the affected flights were diverted to Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram airports in India, as well as Mattala Airport, with the aim of ensuring the maximum safety of passengers.

Due to the ongoing torrential rain, various obstructions, including flooded roads, have caused difficulties for airport staff in reporting for duty.

It is reported that staff from SriLankan Airlines, as well as other international airlines operating through Katunayake Airport, are also facing this situation. Consequently, there are delays in both flight arrivals and departures, and the weather conditions have significantly impacted the airport's normal daily operations.

In light of this emergency, Mr. Deepal Perera, Head of Corporate Communications at SriLankan Airlines, has issued a special announcement for the convenience of air passengers. He emphasizes that it is extremely important for passengers intending to travel abroad today (28th) to confirm the latest status of their flight before departing for the airport. Flight information can be obtained by visiting www.srilankan.com, or by calling 1979 within the country, or +94117 771979 if calling from abroad.

According to forecasts from the Department of Meteorology, rainy weather is likely to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, indicating a possibility of further changes to flight schedules. Airlines are already taking alternative measures to provide food, beverages, and accommodation when necessary for passengers who may be stranded at the airport due to flight delays or cancellations. Authorities further state that the airport's technical divisions and control tower are continuously monitoring weather conditions and taking all necessary steps to ensure flight safety.
