A police officer has been injured and hospitalized due to an incident that occurred while attempting to arrest a warrant holder in the Udupabotuwa area of Nivithigala. A police constable attached to the Delwala Police has sustained injuries, and
this accident occurred when the officer, attempting to stop a car driven by the suspect, hung onto the car's bonnet as it continued to drive without stopping, in an effort to halt it.At the time of the incident, the OIC of Delwala Police and the relevant police constable were traveling towards Udupabotuwa in a police jeep when they observed a person emerging from a shop in the area. After the OIC identified that the individual had an outstanding court warrant, the officers approached the car and ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle.
However, disregarding the police order, the suspect began to drive the car forward, and at that moment, the police constable jumped onto the bonnet to stop it. Police state that the person driving the car continued to drive the vehicle for approximately one and a half kilometers (1 1/2) with the police officer still on the bonnet.
Subsequently, the police officer fell from the car onto the ground and was admitted to Ratnapura Teaching Hospital for treatment. It is reported that the fleeing suspect is a councilor representing the Podujana Eksath Peramuna (People's United Front) in the Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha, and he abandoned the car he was driving near a house on a side road in the Udupabotuwa area before fleeing. Delwala Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
