A person who attempted to cross the Hasalaka Oya near Hasalaka town on the Mahiyanganaya - Kandy main road has been swept away by the strong current. It is reported that the individual was intoxicated and was caught by the strong current while attempting to cross the stream.
On this occasion, police officers and onlookers gathered nearby had warned him, but he disregarded all warnings and entered the water. This unsafe attempt and the tragic scenes of him being swept away by the current were captured as video footage on a mobile phone by someone at the location.
Meanwhile, due to the severe adverse weather conditions prevailing across the island, steps have been taken to restrict traffic on the Kandy - Mahiyanganaya road. Accordingly, the Kandy District Disaster Management Committee has decided to temporarily close the road section from Medamahanuwara to Hasalaka.
Kandy District Secretary Mr. Indika Udawatta stated that as a precautionary measure, the relevant road section would remain closed until 7:00 AM tomorrow (28).
