Online Harassment Challenge
Media personality Yasara Abeynayake has obtained a conditional restraining order from the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court against social media activist Sudatta Thilakasiri.
The order was issued by Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara on October 10, under Section 24 of the Computer Crimes (Online Safety) Act No. 9 of 2024. In addition to Thilakasiri, Google, YouTube, and TikTok were named as responsible parties for content hosting and distribution.
Accusations Made on YouTube and TikTok
According to Yasara’s petition, Sudatta Thilakasiri had been deliberately spreading false and defamatory statements against her on his YouTube and TikTok channels.
Among his claims were shocking allegations — that the Wasim Thajudeen murder was linked to a sexual motive, that Yasara had been “used” by multiple people, and that a mark on her body had some connection to the killing.
Yasara’s Response: “Every Claim is False”
Yasara has strongly denied all accusations. In her submission to court, she stated that she never knew Wasim Thajudeen personally, had no connection or relationship with him, and that no such mark exists on her body as claimed in the online videos.
She further informed the court that medical professionals had examined her and confirmed that the alleged mark does not exist.
Personal Life and Reputational Damage
Yasara acknowledged that she had once been in a relationship with Yoshitha Rajapaksa, but clarified that she is now married to former rugby star Fazil Marija and is a mother of two.
She told the court that the circulation of malicious, fabricated stories has caused her deep humiliation, damaged her reputation as a public figure and mother, and even led to domestic tension within her family.
Court Proceedings and Next Steps
The court has given 14 days for Sudatta Thilakasiri to respond and present his defense through his legal counsel. He also has the right to appeal for the order’s withdrawal.
The case has been scheduled to be heard again on October 28.
