Police recently stopped a vehicle in Kollupitiya during a nighttime patrol, where a breathalyser test confirmed the driver had consumed alcohol.
The individual was summoned before the traffic court. When the Court Mudliyar announced the name of the accused, many lawyers looked up in surprise — it was a name they all recognized. Moments later, a well-known President’s Counsel was seen approaching the dock. Several lawyers hurried to his side, and a junior lawyer even grabbed his arm, pleading with him not to step into the dock.
But the senior lawyer brushed aside their concerns, stating that he required no special treatment. Calmly, he entered the dock.
When asked by the judge how he wished to plead, the President’s Counsel admitted his guilt. He explained that he had consumed a glass of vodka at a party and had been driving when stopped by police. Accepting full responsibility, he said he was ready to face the consequences.
True to his word, he immediately paid the Rs. 25,000 fine imposed on him, choosing not to contest the charge or offer any defence.
