The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that they have launched an investigation into allegations that Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa had fraudulently obtained his Attorney-at-Law qualification.
The probe was initiated based on a complaint lodged by the Citizens’ Power Against Bribery and Corruption. The CID’s Special Investigation Unit stated that the inquiry focuses on whether Rajapaksa engaged in fraudulent activities during his Sri Lanka Law College examinations. Investigators have begun scrutinising official records from the institution as part of their efforts to verify the claims.
After considering the submissions, Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali directed the CID to present a progress report to the court.
Allegations of Preferential Treatment
In December 2010, reports surfaced alleging that Rajapaksa had received preferential treatment during his final law examinations. It was claimed that he was given a separate, air-conditioned room equipped with internet access and was assisted by two lawyers while completing the exam. These allegations were brought forward by Thushara Jayarathna, a fellow law student at the time, who lodged multiple complaints with the Law College examination system, Keselwaththa police station, and the Supreme Court.Jayarathna contended that Rajapaksa’s actions constituted a violation of the examination code and the constitution. However, his complaints were reportedly disregarded, and he allegedly faced threats and harassment following his disclosures.
Investigation and Response
Following renewed scrutiny, the CID's Special Investigation Unit launched an inquiry into these allegations. Their focus is on verifying whether Rajapaksa’s qualifications were obtained fraudulently by reviewing official records from Sri Lanka Law College.Rajapaksa has publicly denied any wrongdoing. In a statement, he acknowledged the complaint and affirmed his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation. He emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability.
As of April 3, 2025, the investigation remains ongoing, with the CID expected to present a progress report to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court in the coming weeks.
