New AI Technology to Prevent Elephant-Train Collisions

 

Sri Lanka faces a growing challenge with elephant-train collisions, posing risks to both human and animal safety. In response, the Ministry of Environment has introduced an innovative AI-based solution to reduce such accidents and protect wildlife.

Development of the AI-Powered Device

The device, developed by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, combines artificial intelligence, sensor technology, and visual recognition. This cutting-edge system aims to detect elephants up to 500 meters away from train tracks, alerting train drivers to prevent accidents.

Pilot Testing and Expected Implementation

The Ministry of Environment has planned a pilot project for the first two weeks of March. The system will undergo technical evaluations, and based on the results, it will be rolled out across high-risk train routes in Sri Lanka. The pilot phase will help assess the system’s effectiveness before broader deployment.

This technology plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of both wildlife and passengers traveling on Sri Lanka’s train networks. By detecting elephants near tracks, the system can provide real-time alerts to train operators, minimizing the risk of collisions and reducing potential harm to both elephants and passengers.

If successful, this pilot project could set a precedent for the widespread use of AI technology across other dangerous train routes in Sri Lanka. The Ministry of Environment, together with the Department of Wildlife Conservation and Sri Lanka Railways, will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the system, with plans for broader implementation across the country’s rail network.
