One person was killed and three others, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Eastern Province State Intelligence Service, were injured in a collision on the Southern Expressway near Dodangoda, past the Welipenna interchange.
The accident occurred when a motorcar transporting ASP H.M.C. Nilanga Herath crashed into another vehicle that had been halted by the roadside due to a technical issue. The driver of the stationary car, A.B. Rizvan from Kalutara North, was fatally injured in the collision.
ASP Herath, his police driver, and a passenger from the other vehicle sustained injuries and were admitted to Kalutara General Hospital in Nagoda for treatment.
Investigations revealed that Rizvan had been standing behind his vehicle when the ASP’s car, driven by a police officer, struck him before crashing into the stationary vehicle.
The police driver was taken into custody by the Expressway Traffic Police pending further investigations into the incident.
