Farmers Discontent Over Minimum Purchasing Price

The government announced a Minimum Purchasing Price (MPP) for paddy varieties that will come into effect tomorrow, Agriculture Minister K.D. Lal Kantha confirmed today. Under the new rates, the Paddy Marketing Board will purchase paddy at Rs. 120 per kilogram for Dried Nadu rice, Rs. 125 for Samba, and Rs. 132 for Keeri Samba.

However, farmers have expressed strong discontent, demanding higher prices, with many calling for the MPP to start at Rs. 150 per kilogram. They argue that the current rates do not adequately reflect the rising cost of production and the financial struggles they face.

The government had been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks for delaying the announcement of the MPP. Farmers have criticized the delay, claiming they were forced to sell their harvest at lower rates to rice millers, leaving them with minimal profits. While the government’s move is seen as a step toward addressing these concerns, the new MPP may not be enough to satisfy the growing discontent among farmers.
