Amidst crisis .. Sajith on a new path

The Samagi Jana Balavegaya inaugural celebration is to held this morning (2) at 9 o'clock presided by Mr. Sajith Premadasa at Nelum Pokuna Theatre. Sajith has decided to start on this political journey at a time when the power of the UNP is to be exchanged to Sajith from Ranil and it is something of interest to note that neither Ranil nor Akila being not present. This is
held in a background where the issue about the symbol or logo has still not been settled. 

Whatever it is, the Jana Balavegaya has already joined hands with several parties inclusive of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Jathika Hela Urumaya, Tamil Progressive Alliance as a common alliance at the next general election. What general secretary of of Samagi Jana Balavegaya, Mp Ranjith Maddumabandara said was that all parties joining hands with them would be going into a formal agreement today(02). Further, approval was given by the executive committee of United National Party to contest as Samagi Jana Balavegaya at forthcoming elections. 

Mr. Sajith Premadasa was named as its opposition leader while Mp Maddumabandara was granted approval to be appointed as the general secretary in that respect. But with the crisis-situation that developed yesterday, a special address would be made by opposition leader Sajith at the celebrations of Samagi Jana Balavegaya which is being launched today, political news sources say. 

While the inaugural celebrations of Samagi Jana Balavegaya will be held this morning (02) at 9 in the morning under the theme new wish and new journey at Nelum Pokuna Theatre, it is reported that Leader of the United National Party Mr. Ranil Wickremasingha had invited representatives of provincial councils and former local government Mps to the party headquarters. In the same manner this morning at 10.30 ... when the occasion of the memorandum of Sagi Jana Balavegaya Alliance is being signed, secretary of United National Party Mr. Akia Viraj Kariyawasam too has called a media confrontation. 

In the meantime, it has been decided at the special executive committee meeting to contest on the logo of the elephant of the United National Party or the Samagi Jana Balavegaya at the forthcoming general elections. Though Mr. Sajith Premadasa and seven members of the executive committee have stated that they wish to come forward at the general elections under the symbol Telephone, the majority of the executive committee have expressed opposition to it. Though majority of the executive committee agreed to come forward with the symbol of Swan ... because of several legal problems including the general secretary sprang up; that symbol had to be dropped. 

Under the above circumstances, political sources say that United National Party leader and a section of members of the executive committee would not attend the inaugural occasion of Samagi Jana Balavegaya headed by Mr. Sajith Premadasa. There is no registration of Samagi Jana Balavegaya constitution and after the Samagi Jana Balavegaya is registered, United National Party leader Mr. Ranil Wickremasingha has informed that alliance that only then he could consider participating in the alliance. In the meantime, the opposition leader's office has released an announcement saying that the meeting of the executive committee of the National United Party concluded yesterday without reaching an agreement on the issue of the symbol with which they are to contest the forthcoming election.
