Soldier murders campus medical student!
Police were able to find the dead body of a medical student of Jaffna university from the sea region of Pannei, Jaffna. Those who are witnesses to the incident had told police they had observed the deceased girl in that location in the company of another young man. An umbrella and a
pair of slippers assumed to be that of the dead student were found in proximity to the dead body and an army soldier suspected to be her husband was apprehended by police when attempting to flee after the murder. As such, according to information secured about the incident .. this soldier had killed the girl and thrown her body into the sea.

A lance corporal in service at the medical section of Jaffna 662nd battalion headquarters known as Maddumage Don Eranga Dilip Kumara aged 30 years was the murderer-husband while the deceased is a 26 year old medical student named Hapuhettige Kanchana living in Bandanagoda, Beruwala. The soldier has confessed that he had slit her throat and dumped her into the sea.
Police say that the suspect has come to Jaffna Fort to meet the student and because of an exchange of words which aggravated, the suspect has cut her neck and arms with a sharp weapon which he had in his hands and pushed her into the sea. When trying to flee, those around the locality had given pursuit behind the killer and after apprehending him, had handed him to police.
This is what an eye-witness said: " It is common to meet lovers along the exercising strip. We saw these two also there. All of a sudden we felt some commotion flaring up between the two. But we didn't care to look into it as such. Suddenly we heard the girl shouting. We knew that the young man stabbed the girl with a weapon. After that he pushed the girl and when trying to run away, the crowd ran behind him and got hold of him and handed him to police. We understood that the girl's neck was severed and that she had died".
The murdered student was a married person from Bandanagoda, Walathara, Beruwala. After the stabbing, she passed away while being taken to hospital. The army soldier was attached to the medical battalion and was living Kalavila, Beruwala, She has got married to this soldier about two years back and there had been constant domestic conflicts between the two as a result of which this medical student has come to live in her house, a relative of the family said. A divorce case too has been filed. The case is presently being heard.
The father of the medical student who was subjected to murder serves the police superintendent's office in Kalutara division in the capacity of a personal assistant. The deceased is the eldest in a family of four children and has two younger brothers and a younger sister, police said. Her brother is a student at the medical faculty in Colombo.
This 26 year old student was studying at the medical faculty of Jaffna university in the final year. A person who is supposed to be her husband named Maddumage Don Eranga Dilip Kumara, aged 30 years and a permanent resident of Kandegama, Beruwala affiliated to an army camp in Paranthan, Jaffna was taken into custody. The deceased dead body is lying at Jaffna Basic Hospital and investigations regarding the incident is underway. Jaffna police is carrying out further investigations regarding the incident.
