What is Sajith going to do now?
All sorts of stories are brewing around by now about Sajith Premadasa who lost the presidential election as to what he is going to do now.
What is stated from one news is a group of MPs are getting ready to appoint Sajith Premadasa as leader of United National Party. It is their contention that their opinion is that there is no future for UNP under prime minister Ranil. They have pointed out that the opposition launched by Ranil from the start and that he had mentioned on several occasions that he would be the future premier during the course of the election campaign reflected negatively on Sajith's defeat. In order to settle this anxious matter, in one instance Sajith has addressed the public and thus even had to make a statement that premier may not be Ranil himself.
At a meeting held at parliamentary complex yesterday (18) under patronage of premier Ranil Wickremasingha, member of parliament Kabir Hasheem brought a proposal that Sajith should be made the leader in future to which there was serious protest by some MPs. Those MPs have mentioned that at a moment when Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has eclipsed Sajith Premadasa by 13 lakhs more ... to refrain from speaking about party leadership.
What minister Daya Gamage has pointed out is that attention should be focused on Sajith Premadasa being forwarded for the presidential election and experiencing defeat thereby. At this point the prime minister has mentioned that nothing would be stated by thinking about the future of the party.
Sajith Pemadasa did not attend this meeting. It was reported that the group of MPs of United National Party have come into an agreement that the general election be held after February next year. In the meantime minister Sajith Premadasa has hosted a lunch for ministers and MPs who supported him at presidential elections and the function was held at Colombo Galle Face hotel last afternoon (18). MPs who joined Sajith at this function has suggested that Ranil Wickremasingha be ousted from his position of leader of the party.Several MPS have made a proposal that Sajith Premadasa be appointed to party leadership.
By this time several ministers who supported minister Sajith Premadasa have decided to vacate their posts and even state minister of transport who was newly appointed has resigned from his position. Kabir Hasheem, Harin Fernando, Mangala Samaraweera, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Ruwan Wijeywardena, Malik Samarawickrema and Ajith P. Perera have resigned from their posts. There is also a rumour that minister Sajith Premadasa has left his position as deputy leader of United National Party after his defeat to show his protest against Ranil and in order to build a separate power. Sajith would manipulate the UNP crowd under a different party if Ranil would not relinquish his position as it would be unfavourable if Ranil would remain further in the party, reports were published.
