Ranil Wickremasingha vacates post as premier

In order to facilitate matters to form an administrative group  according to desires of president Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, prime minister Ranil Wickremasingha has resigned from his position, prime minister's office announced this afternoon around 3.45.

In the discussion which ensued with president Gotabhaya, Ranil has agreed not to secure a 2/3rds
majority to grant authority to dissolve parliament and install a new government now itself based on the point of not making 40 or more MPs who are to go in for their pension. This decision was taken in unison with both Gotabhaya and Ranil that the only alternative was to form a government within the existing framework ... to elect MPs of the opposition in parliament who comprise a minority ... to be converted to the position of ministers.

With Ranil's resignation, the cabinet of ministers too will be abolished. Under the presidential portfolio of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a new prime minister and a fresh cabinet would be sworn in in future.
