Former prime minister D.M. Jayaratna passes away

Mr. D.M. Jayaratna who was a senior politician and prime minister of Sri Lanka passed away this afternoon while in his 88th year. He was in fat was under treatment being indisposed during the past few days. 

Mr. Jayaratna who was one of the oldest members of Sri Lanka Freedom Party was born on 4th June,
1931. He had his education at Gampola Doluwa Maha Vidyalaya, a short distance away from Kandy. He earlier served as a teacher and postmaster and was a a member of Sri Lanka Freedom Party when it was started in 1951 in Kandy by Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaika. 

Mr. Jayaratna entered parliament in 1970 from the general election for the first time and was defeated in the 1977 elections. He was then once more elected to parliament from Kandy district in 1989. He secured 54,290 preferential votes headed the list from Sri Lanka Freedom Party from Kandy district. 

Mr. Jayaratna was again elected to parliament under the Alliance in 1994 and became a member of the cabinet of president Chandrika Kumaratunga for the first time securing the position of minister of lands, agriculture and wild life conservation. On April 21st, 2010 he was sworn in as prime minister. Anuradha Jayaratna, Mr. D.M. Jayaratna is presently engaged in politics. The daughter is Senani Jayaratna and happens to be the present wife of MP Mr. Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
