Daughter who went overseas and returns after studies, files action in court against parents saying they compel her to marry without being employed!

A court order was issued prohibiting a father and mother from refraining from pressurising their daughter and stop visiting the place where she was staying who are supposed to have forced their young daughter to enter into marriage against her decision to get employed and live independently. She has stated in her complaint that after her return to Sri Lanka in the year 2016 on completion of her advanced studies overseas, various conflicts of opinion have flared up regarding her ideas and living style between her and her parents.

The petitioner has filed action in court asking for protection saying that her mother has got together
with her relatives and has proceeded to always insult by word of mouth her saying, "A straying woman ... a harlot!" and applied pressure on her. Her father on the other hand, she said had tied her with chains and kept her imprisoned her in the house. The petitioner further exclaimed that the parents had in the month of April, 2018 had taken her to a doctor to give her some medicament so that it would obliterate her memory and forced her to change her style of dress and to chuck up her job and to get married soon. The complainant also said that her father would visit the place where she works and was involved in assaulting her friends, thus behaving in an aggressive manner and that he would insult everybody who are supporting her; finally pleaded from court asking that she be allowed the right for her to live independently.

The court after taking into consideration points forwarded by both parties finally issued a protection order stating that this petitioner is an independent person and that she possesses the right to live independently. This protection order was issued by preventing entering any place of temporary residence or subjecting her to pressure, preventing entering her place of work and by preventing aggressive acts against any person who would support her.

Colombo Fort magistrate Mr. Ranga Dissanayaka enforced a protection order last 11th. This order was enforced by the magistrate to to be implemented to operate from September 12th for one year ahead after taking into consideration the petition forwarded by this 24 year old young girl. The magistrate who summoned both parents connected to this incident to court after issuing the protection order released the two of them with a surety of one lakh each.
