Number of dead bodies recovered from Hiriwadunna rises to 7

After 4 corpses of she elephants were found mysteriously dead in the Thunbikulama Hiriwadunna, Habarana ... three other dead bodies were found today (28), officers have informed. By now the number of bodies already so found total 7.

It is something special to note that a cub elephant of about four years was seen safeguarding the dead
body of the she elephant found early this morning, it was reported. This small elephant not knowing that her mother had died had been remaining close to her mother without allowing anybody getting close to that place was indeed a sensitive moment for most people.

Officers of Sigiriya wild life office, the army, Habarana police and villagers have begun operations to search whether there are are other dead bodies. Post-mortem activities of the deceased elephants are being conducted by veterinary surgeons of the wild life department. As the small elephant would not permit the post-mortem to be carried out, wild life officers have taken steps to anesthesize the cub and chase it away to a different location.

All seven corpses so far recovered being that of she elephants is something special while these animals were mothers who were pregnant with small cubs, wild life officers mention. Wild life officers mention that the reason for these animals to die is still not specifically able to say and that examinations are being further conducted in that connection.
