Colombo archbishop Malcom Cardinal Ranjith exclaimed at the inaugural meeting held day before yesterday at Sri Lanka Foundation public hall, Colombo that he was surprised at the proposal to name Sri Lanka as a non-religious country thus dismissing the position given to Buddhism according to the draft bill of the new constitution by drafting committee of the constitution.
The archbishop who expressed further ideas about this further mentioned, "I looked into a to what is going to be done to this country because the culture of this land was built upon the foundation of
Buddhism. Though I am a Catholic it is something that I endorse. We have not seen any other country giving respect and honour to clergy leading a spiritual life. But no other country is to be seen where a separate seat is allocated to the clergy.

Political leaders have taken action without any conscience in order to protect their personal powers. Because of this it is to be seen that the country is on a backward path. Though this is a beautiful country ... it is our country that has turned into a bin of trash. Thousands of containers with waste material have been brought from England and dumped here. It is because people in that country think that our country is a garbage bin".
