Last week what two civil activists Gamini Wiyangoda and professor Chandraguptha Thenuwara appealed to inspector general of police was to inquire as to how former defence secretary managed to acquire a Sri Lankan foreign passport and national identity card without expressing his status of dual citizenship or not making a statement under the Citizenship Act. A survey conducted by Sunday Observer newspaper had reported about irregularities of the manner in which Rajapaksa has secured dual citizenship in November, 2005. According to the amendment of the 19th constitutional amendment of 2015, where section 91 is concerned, no person who is a citizen of a different country other than Sri Lanka is prohibited from contesting the post of President or to serve in the capacity of a President.
