Sri Lanka trounces West Indies!

Sri Lanka emerged winners in the first match in the first round played under the world cup trophy. It is a special feature to record that Sri Lanka was able to amass a large total of 338 surpassing 250 runs for the first time in the tournament. The West Indies who pursued that target could acquire only 315 runs for 9 wickets.  

Avishka Fernando who scored his maiden century of 104 runs in 103 balls with almost double quick
time could be called the hallmark of this victory. Kusal Perera (64) and Lahiru Thirimanna (45) too stood out in batting while Malinga grabbed 3 wickets and Angelo Matthews was able to clinch the invaluable scalp of Nicholas Puran who had by then scored 118. 

Matthews in fact had kept away from bowling for about one and a half hours since December, 2017 because of being handicapped with injury. It indeed was something special to record that he was crowned with a most valuable wicket on the very first ball of his very first over itself. Till then the signs were that it would have been a difficult task for Sri Lanka to get their victory if Puran remained further at the wicket. Avishka was adjudged the man of the match. It was Sangakkara who functioned  as the interpreter in translating questions asked in English, thus interpreting them. With this victory, Sri Lanka has crept upto 6th position in the table.
