An incident where causing damage to two Buddhist statues in Randiwela and Mahaththegama in Mawanella police area was initially reported on the morning of December 24th, 2018. Two individuals engaged in this act of vandalism were apprehended and one of them had fled, it was reported.
The woman arrested is the wife of the main suspect the latter of whom beat a retreat when engaged in the act of vandalism of causing damage to Dilulawaththa Buddha statue. This main suspect happens to be 30 year old Mohommed Ibrahim Sadik Abdullah. This female taken into custody too has fled leaving the area.
Over 15 persons taken into custody in connection with acts of vandalism connected to Buddhist statues have been arrested by now and all of them are young men between 20 - 30 years. In any case, wife of the main suspect who had been in hiding for close upon 5 months after the above incident, was finally taken into custody around 1 in the afternoon on 26th. Incidentally she was arrested in the background where she was rejected by her parents. Subsequently, parents of the suspect woman in the Mawanella house were contacted over the phone by security forces.
In the meantime, main suspects, 27 year old Mohommed Ibrahim Saheed and Fathima's husband, 30 year old Mohommed Ibrahim Sadeek the two brothers were taken into custody at Gampola area. The father happened to be a Moulavi by the name of Rasheed Mohommed Ibrahim, a moulavi and he too is presently in remand. Security forces have found out information by now to the effect that there is a connection with suspects who destroyed Buddha statues and bomb blasts targeted at several locations on Easter Sunday.
