Engineer students who climbed Kiralagala Chetiya ... in custody

Police investigations have commenced in connection with photographs released to the internet during the past few days which incidentally created an uproar. The photos depicted some students who had climbed the ruined chetiya in the ancient archaeological site of Kiralagala in Horowpathana and it had been found that these photos had been released to the internet by seven
Engineer undergraduates of South Eastern  University and they have been apprehended Amparai.

Even prior to this, police investigations about obscene photos taken at Pidurangala Vihara and this incident too has taken place in the same way. Police say that the all the 7 students were identified after an inquiry on a complaint made to police by the Archaeological officer in charge of Kiralagala Archaeology zone. On inquiries conducted as result, it was understood that tourists were present on most occasions to see this archaeological site; but there was no name board displayed to denote that it is a archaeological site and further that it was a Muslim national who is posted there for security purposes.

This locations boasts of the second largest pond in Sri Lanka and that it displays among archaeological ruins an ancient hospital too. However, it was reported by police that suspects arrested have not caused any damage to this archaeological site as such. Suspects taken into custody are to be produced before Kebethigollewa Magistrate today (24).
