Sri Lanka trounce England and claim massive win!
Sri Lanka team defeats England yesterday at the one day game played between Sri Lanka and England at Colombo R. Premadasa Grounds. As a result of showers interrupting play during the past few days there was a possibility that the final decision of the game may be decided on the Duckworth - Lewis theory, the Sri Lankan players used the strategy of acquiring quick runs, thus ending up with victory. As a consequence, this heroic unanticipated victory amidst pressure from
critics thus became the talk of the town in international sporting circles as well.
Sri Lanka batted first and amassed 366 for 6 wickets and gave England a difficult target of 367 and when 26.1 overs were bowled ... England players had acquired only a paltry 132 runs and that too with 9 wickets down when heavy showers took over. As such, Sri Lanka emerged winners according to the Duckworth - Lewis theory.
Sri Lanka's opening pair Niroshan Dikwella and Sadeera Samaraickrema (54 runs) put on a formidable total of 54 runs partnership after winning the toss. Their partnership was 137. Opener Niroshan Dikwella scored 95 runs with 12 fours. However, England bowler Moeen Ali was smart enough to claim Niroshan Dikwella's scalp when he was on the verge of cracking his century. Chandimal managed to click his 22nd half century while Kusal Mendis got his 12th half century. Their partnership was 102 runs. Kusal Mendis who had chipped in with 56 runs gave his wicket by offering a catch.
Mendis who was consistently out of form in recent times continuously scored his runs with 6 sixes and 1 four while Sri Lanka's captain Chandimal scored 80 in the space of 73 balls. His innings comprised of 2 sixes and 6 fours. At the end of the 50 overs the Sri Lankan players had scored 366 for the loss of 6 wickets. This incidentally was the highest total scored by Sri Lanka in a match against England. The England team who came into bat pursuing a target of 367 runs saw 3 wickets tumbling for just 4 runs. Ben Stokes who scored the highest managed to collect 67 runs. DushmanthaChameera was successful in bagging 3 wickets for just 20 runs in 6 overs he bowled while Akila Dhananjaya managed to bag 4 wickets for 19 runs in 6 overs and 1 ball.
