Geetha removed from post of MP for holding dual citizenship -- rules Supreme Court
The Supreme Court ruled today that as Mrs. Geetha Kumarasingha holds dual citizenship, she is not eligible to claim position of Member of Parliament.
Mrs. Geetha Kumarasingha was appointed in parliament having represented Galle District in the year 2015
elections. However, though Appeal Courts confirmed that since she held citizenship in Switzerland too, she is not allowed to hold the post of MP, on the appeal she had forwarded against that decision she was permitted to hold that post for a short period of time.
Subsequently, the 5 member bench which inquired into her petition rejected the appeal today. It was 4 residents of Galle District who consulted the Appeal Courts against her. The bench of judges who announced the verdict instructed Secretary of the Supreme Court to notify the General Secretary of the parliament about the decision, without delay.
