Agitation where Rogingya refugees are stationed
As a result of an instance of agitation near Mt. Lavinia Junction, a heavy traffic congestion occured this afternoon.
The reason for this agitation was that Rogingya refugees of Myanmar had been staying in this particular house illegally for which Buddhist monks had shown their protest. These Myanmar nationals who were staying in Kankesanthurai
without visas on the mediation of the police were arrested recently and with the intervention of United Nations High Commission were found lodging for rent at this said house on a temporary basis, it was said.
Whatever it is, as this place did not provide sufficient security and because of a clue that a protest was in the offing, the police had mediated and all of them were escorted to the police station this morning (26). However, because of lack of space, once again they were dumped in this very house. It was after that, this clamour had flared up.
When a group of monks and some others had tried to engage in an instance of agitation over the fact that Myanmar Rogingya refugees were staying in this house and that their children have been provided education facilities and not as refugees and that action is being taken by the government to find permanent residentship ultimately ended up in this state of commotion. As a consequence of this, Galle Road was obstructed this afternoon.
