The government has announced that intake of new students to Malabe private medical university would be temporarily withdrawn. Recommendations of the committee appointed to look into protests staged yesterday and the SAITM issue was the outcome of this. Admissions would be barred temporarily at least until December 31st till such time as the minimum criterion that
should be seen in a medical college is gazetted.
The secret report of the committee appointed by the President under the supervision of Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva to look into the SAITM issue was handed over to the President last 11th. As stated there, SAITM would not be totally acquired by the government; but it would be taken away from Neville Fernando and was recommended to maintain its proceedings as a semi-governmental institution with the mediation of the government and the private sector. It has also proposed a speedy programme to plan out the standard of the medical college. The said secret report too was exposed to the media and it is seen below
