"Charlie Austin is someone like my driver ... Sanath was included as an additional player, for political reasons" --
The discussion which former captain of the Sri Lankan Cricket team Mahela Jayawardena had with BBC Sinhala Service about the fate that has befallen on the game of Cricket in Sri Lanka would be significant in relation to the Cricket crisis that has raised its head these days.
"Other than my Cricket I appoint another party for my other work. Other than that none of us work for
Charlie Austin as such. It's like as if I normally take a driver to get my work done. Whatever it is, it is good if a check is carried out on the managers and thus bring in administration. That control is not only for managers it should be so where Cricket authorities and for politics too. I wish to say with responsibility that when I was captaining in England in 2006 the Sports Minister sends an additional player asking that he also be taken. Those too are influences and those too should be controlled.
Even before 2 years ago and 10 years back I said that if Cricket is to advance, a First Class tournament should be launched. What we have is Cricketing problems and it's those things that should be remedied. When things like these happen the players become divided. What we play are not good matches. We should get together with the best players and play with them". (According to Mahela the additional player introduced is former Cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya).
