Colombo garbage to Karadiyana by court order ... only for 11 days

Kesbewa Acting Magistrate Mrs. Sunethra Perera issued orders yesterday (18) to dispose garbage collected in Colombo to be dumped to Karadiyana in Piliyandala. It was stated that it was only for a period of 11 days. In this instance it was stated that 350 metric tons of garbage for a day is to be dumped in Karadiyana only from the period beginning April 17th to April 28th to the dumping yard there as stated in the order and as such the Colombo Municipal Council has taken steps to
release 350 metric tons of garbage to this Karadiyana garbage yard while it is reported that some other lorries have returned once more.

Though garbage that gather in the city of Colombo had so far been released to Meetotamulla area, as a result of a part of the garbage dump collapsing last 14th, dumping of garbage has been temporarily curtailed. Therefore, on a request made by Colombo Municipal Council to courts to release garbage from the city of Colombo , this request was approved.

After securing permission from courts, Mr. K.A. Anura, Municipal Commissioner of Colombo said that dumping of garbage to Karadiyana yard commenced operations yesterday itself. Apart from this, he said that 3 other locations have been selected for the same purpose; but what those localities cannot be revealed right now. Steps have been taken to afford security measures to the area covering the said yard in Karadiyana. The Municipal Commissioner stated that a quantity of garbage amounting to 750 tons get collected daily in the city of Colombo. Whatever it is, garbage from municipal council areas of Boralesgomuwa, Kotte, Dehiwala - Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa and Kesbewa are being released while garbage in Homagama and Wethara areas too are being released in a small measure.
