President's orders: VIP motorcades forcibly demanding thoroughfare to be apprehended

Minister motorcades travelling like thugs on highways are to be seen on a big scale during the past regime and on a minor scale in this regime. On most occasions one could clearly see how most Defender vehicles mark the motorcade with headlights on unnecessarily implying 'we can't waste time ... we have work ... give us room
immediately'. At a time when seven or eight vehicles in procession one after the other move in swift speed with headlights thus active ambulances on the route are expected to provide room for this motorcade, if not, it has been a factor of getting knocked down or else being subjected to filthy language. It is apparent that they are of the opinion that they are the only people who are in a great hurry. President Maithripala Sirisena recently informed the Inspector General of Police that if such instances are seen, to furnish him with a report after checking who is being transported this way by stopping the motorcade concerned in such instances. This was mentioned by the President at the Road Safety Week ceremony held at Independence Square, Colombo.

The President who remarked that at a meeting of the cabinet it was stated by them that one vehicle is sufficient for the protection of a Minister when they were travelling in this manner. He further mentioned that it should be checked whether it is cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chief Ministers, Ministers of provinces, Heads of the Forces or else criminals for that matter who are on the move like this. The President added that the police takes no action believing that it is a VVIP or VIP who is moving with headlights on. Therefore, he advised that those vehicles should be checked to see who is travelling and to forward a weekly report to him.
