Having bade goodbye to swordplay which existed for a lengthy period of time, the United Opposition Party has requested for permission to establish a Party, modernising a Party already in existence and with Mahinda Rajapaksa as its head
this time; thus confirming the division that existed in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

As such, the Party which had been registered as Our Sri Lanka Nidahas Peramuna has changed its name to 'Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna' and has appointed Professor G.L. Pieris as its Chairman, it is reported. Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam is operating as the Secretary and the symbol of the new Party is the 'lotus'. Although this Party was to be launched at the last rally in Ratnapura, what political sources now report is that 'Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna' is expected to be installed as the new political Party of the United Opposition in Anuradhapura on 18th November which marks the birthday of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Dinesh Goonawardena, leader of Jathika Nidahas Peramuna Wimal Weeravansha, leader of Hela Urumaya Udaya Gammanpila, leader of Prajathanthrawadi Vamanshika Peramuna Vasudeva Nanayakkara are taking a strong hand in building up the new alliance and political parties and several civil organisations have have joined hands and commenced discussions to get together with the new Party.
